The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Germany welcomes the conclusion of a long-term gas supply agreement between the Azerbaijani state company SOCAR and the German federal company SEFE (Securing Energy for Europe GmbH). This agreement foresees the annual supply of up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Germany starting in 2025. Coupled with existing deliveries to UNIPER of a similar magnitude, Azerbaijan’s gas exports to Germany will double to approximately 3 billion cubic meters annually.

Strengthening European Supply Security

With this step, Azerbaijan makes another significant contribution to diversifying European energy sources and stabilizing long-term supply security in Germany and Europe. Deliveries will be made via the Southern Gas Corridor, including the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), a proven route between the Caspian region and the EU.

Azerbaijan: A Reliable Partner for Europe

Azerbaijan currently supplies natural gas to eleven European countries, including nine EU member states. During the 2022 energy crisis, Azerbaijan responded decisively to Europe’s call for help and within two years increased gas exports from approximately 8 billion to about 13 billion cubic meters annually. This new contract is a clear sign that Azerbaijan remains a reliable long-term energy partner for Europe.

Dr. Egbert Laege, CEO of SEFE, stated: “This agreement is a confirmation of the good relations between Germany and Azerbaijan. With this partnership, we are creating a new route for transporting large volumes of gas to Europe, diversifying our portfolio, and increasing supply security for our customers.”

Rovshan Najaf, President of SOCAR, emphasized: “This agreement represents another significant milestone in SOCAR’s continuous commitment to strengthening Europe’s energy security. By reliably supplying extensive volumes of natural gas to SEFE, we are solidifying the partnership between Azerbaijan and Germany and making an important contribution to Europe’s goals for energy diversification and sustainable growth.”

Excellent Bilateral Relations

The energy partnership is embedded in the broad and dynamic bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Germany. Since February 2023, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has visited Germany four times, while Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and other high-ranking representatives of Germany have paid successful visits to Azerbaijan. These intensive high-level contacts and tangible results reflect the steadily growing trust, political dialogue, and the interest of both states in close cooperation.

Nasimi Aghayev, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Germany, added: “This historic gas supply agreement is a shining example of the depth and potential of our relations. It underscores Azerbaijan’s role as a strategic energy partner for Germany and Europe, while simultaneously deepening the excellent bilateral ties based on mutual respect and shared interests. We are proud to make a substantial contribution to Germany’s energy security and look forward to further strengthening our cooperation in all areas.”
