The conference offered an invaluable opportunity for the Azerbaijani government to shed light on its perspective regarding regional stability, cooperation, and the ongoing challenges in the South Caucasus. Hajiyev’s remarks resonated with clarity and pragmatism, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy and cooperation to ensure peace in the region.

The South Caucasus: A Complex Region

The South Caucasus region has long been characterized by its geopolitical complexity and historical tensions. It encompasses countries like Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and is nestled between Russia, Turkey, and Iran. This intricacy has made it a focal point for international attention and diplomacy. The recent history of the region has been marred by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which was brought to a halt in 2020 through a ceasefire brokered by Russia.

Commitment to Peace and Stability

Hajiyev began by reiterating Azerbaijan’s commitment to peace and stability in the South Caucasus. He emphasized that Azerbaijan had consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and had engaged in constructive dialogue with international partners to achieve this end. The 2020 ceasefire agreement, brokered by Russia, has ushered in a new era of hope for the region, and Azerbaijan is determined to maintain the peace.

Cooperation with European Partners

The Assistant to the President underscored Azerbaijan’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with European partners. The European Union (EU) has a significant stake in the South Caucasus, and Azerbaijan views the EU as a vital player in promoting stability and economic development in the region. Azerbaijan has already made substantial progress in fostering closer ties with the EU, particularly in the areas of energy security and transportation.

Humanitarian Concerns

Hajiyev didn’t shy away from addressing humanitarian concerns in the region. He expressed Azerbaijan’s readiness to work with international organizations and partners to address issues such as the return of displaced persons and the recovery of cultural heritage sites in areas previously occupied by Armenia. This approach demonstrates a commitment to reconciliation and rebuilding in the region.

Economic Development

Economic development was a key theme of the press conference. Hajiyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s vision for the South Caucasus as an economic hub, emphasizing the role of regional connectivity, trade, and investment. Azerbaijan’s ambitious plans for transportation infrastructure, such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, underpin its commitment to the economic prosperity of the entire region.

Regional Security

Security concerns were also addressed by Hajiyev, who acknowledged the importance of a stable security environment in the South Caucasus. Azerbaijan has taken steps to strengthen its own security while also advocating for a broader regional security framework. Hajiyev noted that regional security requires the cooperation of all stakeholders to address common challenges such as terrorism and organized crime.

Hikmat Hajiyev provided valuable insights into Azerbaijan’s perspective on regional stability and cooperation in the South Caucasus. Azerbaijan’s commitment to peace, cooperation with European partners, addressing humanitarian concerns, fostering economic development, and ensuring regional security are all vital elements of its strategy for the region.
As Azerbaijan continues to play an active role in shaping the future of the South Caucasus, its commitment to peace and cooperation holds the promise of a more stable and prosperous region for all its inhabitants.
