During the meeting, Zaur Mikayilov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency, provided updates on the ongoing efforts related to the reconstruction of drinking and wastewater supply systems across the country. Mikayilov highlighted the utilization of expertise from leading global companies in these projects. He specifically noted the commencement of a pilot project for drinking water production through seawater desalination, aimed at enhancing water supply in Baku city and its environs, as initiated by President Ilham Aliyev’s decree on April 12, 2023. Mikayilov emphasized the significance of collaboration with Israeli firms in processing Caspian Sea water.
Amir Lang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Israel’s national water operator, Mekorot Water Company, shared insights during the meeting. He mentioned that Mekorot meets 90 percent of Israel’s drinking water demand, with about 60 percent of supplied water derived from desalination of seawater. Lang highlighted Mekorot’s global collaboration in seawater desalination and water management.
During the meeting, an agreement was signed between Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency “Azersu” OJSC and Mekorot Water Company for technical consulting services in the seawater desalination project. The participants also discussed potential future cooperation in the drinking water supply sector.
