He emphasized that even during the Soviet era, Khankendi was developed using the Azerbaijani budget by Azerbaijani architects and builders. The regional party committee building in Khankendi was designed by Gasan Mejidov, the regional executive committee building by Nasrullah Kengerli, and the hotel building by Enver Gasyimzade.
President Aliyev noted that the central square in Khankendi is named Victory Square. “For many years, this square and this building were a den of separatists… It was here that vile plans against our people were devised. It was in this building that orders for the Khojaly genocide were given. And today, we stand on this square. I want to tell my dear people that I have named this square ‘Victory Square’. From now on, it is Victory Square,” said President Aliyev in his Novruz greeting.
