President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has described Germany as the leading political power in Europe, emphasizing its pivotal role in shaping an independent and balanced policy within the European Union. The statement came during the international forum “Facing the New World Order”, held at ADA University in Baku.
Responding to a question regarding political and economic cooperation with Germany, President Aliyev underscored his expectations from the new German government.
“The leading economy is Germany, and the leading political force in Europe is Germany,” Aliyev stated.
The Azerbaijani leader expressed hope that Germany would maintain an independent course in EU policy, despite pressures from certain pro-Armenian political groups and specific member states.
“I hope that the European Union will not fail under the influence of pro-Armenian groups there,” he added.
Aliyev highlighted that Azerbaijan sees Germany as a key partner in deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economic sphere. He noted that the recent official visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Baku marked a historic milestone in bilateral relations.
“We consider this visit… as an important milestone in our relationship,” he emphasized.
Earlier during the forum, President Aliyev strongly reacted to a controversial image posted on the official website of the German President, which showed the flag of the now-defunct separatist regime in Karabakh. Following a formal apology from the German side, the visit proceeded as planned and, according to Aliyev, took place in a warm and constructive atmosphere.
