“Of course, it is simply impossible to conclude a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan while Armenia’s current Constitution remains unchanged,” Aliyev stated.
According to him, when Azerbaijan raises this issue, it does not mean that Baku is interfering in Armenia’s internal affairs. “Absolutely not, but it concerns us. We cannot conclude a peace agreement with Armenia while they have territorial claims against us,” the Azerbaijani leader emphasized.
Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan has never had and does not have any territorial claims against any country, including Armenia.
“It is they [Armenia] who have territorial claims against us. It is in their declaration of independence, which later became part of their Constitution, that there are territorial claims against Azerbaijan,” he added.
The President of Azerbaijan also stressed that Armenia needs to completely abandon ideas of revanchism:
“And we see that such ideas exist, not only among the opposition but also within the ruling group. The Azerbaijani side is committed to constructive work on agreeing to all points of the peace treaty in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.”
