In an interview with the Observer newspaper, Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Department for Foreign Policy Affairs at the Presidential Administration, made this statement.
“We are discussing with various partners the possibility of a ceasefire during COP, similar to during the Olympics. However, these discussions are at an early stage. It will require further consultations and discussions,” Hajiyev noted.
According to him, Azerbaijan is making and will continue to make additional efforts to turn COP29 into another success story in the field of peace, along with addressing the issue of climate change.
“We are working on promoting a peace agenda. The climate crisis is likely to exacerbate food and water shortages, possibly increasing migration levels, intensifying pressure on states and potentially causing border issues.
Security consists of many elements, and it cannot be denied that climate impacts, environmental changes, or ecological problems are related to national security and peace,” he added. “Climate change is part of national and global security,” Hajiyev concluded.
