According to the document, a recent study by the World Resources Institute ranks Azerbaijan 59th out of 164 countries likely to experience water resource depletion by 2050, classifying it as a country facing medium to high water stress (20-40%).
The National Report of Azerbaijan, presented to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, predicts a 5-10% reduction in Azerbaijan’s water resources (including transboundary water) by 2040, and a 10-15% reduction by 2070. Another scenario suggests a 10-15% reduction by 2040 and a 15-25% decrease by 2070.
The National Strategy also highlights plans to construct 28 hydroelectric power plants in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur.
The efficient use of water resources and the hydroelectric potential of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur will be facilitated by the implementation of “smart water supply” technologies.
