German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, speaking at a press conference during the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, emphasized the need to intensify international efforts to combat climate change.
Baerbock highlighted the critical importance of meeting the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius:
“We are at a decisive stage at COP29. The final document is not ready yet, but reaching an agreement is of immense significance. Even minimal progress in this area is extraordinarily important.”
She proposed the creation of an intercontinental climate coalition, stressing that climate change requires collective action:
“This is not an issue any single country can solve. Agreements on climate financing are crucial to supporting the nations most vulnerable to climate change. Every climate conference includes adaptation measures. To date, about $2 trillion have been invested in renewable energy.”
Baerbock stated that the European Union is committed to consolidating efforts in climate financing and investment to position Europe as a leader in combating climate change:
“We must transform Europe into a climate continent.”
