The congress, hosted in Kanaky (New Caledonia), brought together parliamentarians, political party leaders, and representatives of civil society from French-colonised territories, including New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, and Corsica. The event aimed to discuss the enduring legacy of colonialism and foster cooperation in the fight for independence.
In his address, Abbasov underscored the symbolic significance of holding the congress in Kanaky, especially following the tragic events of 2024, when French authorities violently suppressed peaceful Kanak protests. The brutal crackdown left 13 people dead and over 200 injured, drawing international condemnation.
Freedom does not come easily—it demands sacrifices, Abbasov stated, highlighting the importance of global efforts to eradicate systemic oppression and restore justice to colonised peoples.
The Azerbaijani official also praised President Ilham Aliyev for publicly condemning the actions of French authorities and expressing solidarity with the Kanak people. Abbasov noted that BIG had promptly informed international organisations about the atrocities, helping to raise global awareness.
The Baku Initiative Group is proud to have supported the International Front of Decolonisation from its inception, he said, describing the organisation as a vital platform for dialogue, action, and solidarity.
The congress provided an opportunity for representatives from across the globe to discuss the consequences of colonialism, strategies for combating neocolonial practices, and pathways toward self-determination. Abbasov expressed confidence that the event would mobilise collective efforts to achieve justice and equality for colonised nations.
As the congress concluded, participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening international solidarity in the fight against colonial domination and ensuring that future generations inherit a world free from oppression.
The Baku Initiative Group continues to play an active role in advocating for decolonisation, despite challenges such as visa restrictions that prevented in-person attendance at the congress. Abbasov’s speech served as a reminder of Azerbaijan’s unwavering support for the rights and dignity of all peoples striving for independence.
