This initiative was highlighted during a recent discussion between BISTP’s Chief Operating Officer, Eugene Seah, and UN representatives, as reported by Trend News Agency.
The event, titled “Promotion of initiatives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the port of Baku and COP29 opportunities,” took place with key participants including Kanako Mabuchi, head of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, and Samir Mammadov, a representative from the UN Global Compact.
During the meeting, the focus was on strengthening partnerships to support Azerbaijan’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing other SDG-related initiatives.
Azerbaijan is set to host COP29 this November, a decision confirmed during the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 last year. This significant event will turn Baku into a global hub, welcoming approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international visitors.
The UNFCCC, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, seeks to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC. With 198 member countries, the COP meets annually unless otherwise agreed. The inaugural COP was held in Berlin in March 1995, and its secretariat is based in Bonn, Germany.
BISTP’s engagement with UN representatives underscores its commitment to advancing sustainable development and climate action, contributing to Azerbaijan’s efforts to meet international climate targets.
