The event is organized by the People’s Union for the Liberation of Guadeloupe with the support of the Baku Initiative Group, according to “Azertac.”
The idea for the Congress originated from political parties and movements fighting for the independence of France’s overseas territories. Three organizations from the islands of Bonaire and Saint Martin, colonies of the Netherlands, will attend as honorary guests.
The two-day Congress will provide a platform for the participating parties to discuss ways to coordinate their efforts more effectively, aiming to overcome French colonialism through the creation of a unified platform for a more organized struggle for independence. Representatives of the colonies will also discuss the most effective practices and strategies for achieving self-determination.
The Congress will help raise international awareness of the numerous crimes and illegal actions committed by the French government in the colonies against the indigenous peoples, who are the rightful owners of these territories. It will also draw attention to the issue of colonialism, which remains a major problem in the 21st century.
The Baku Initiative Group was established by participants of the conference “Towards the Complete Elimination of Colonialism” on July 6, 2023, in Baku, as part of the ministerial meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement, chaired by the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Baku Initiative Group has been supporting the just struggle for the freedom of peoples suffering from colonialism for a year, organizing up to 15 international conferences. Four of these conferences were held at the UN headquarters in New York, Geneva, and Vienna, one in Istanbul, and the rest in Baku.
The Congress of Independence Movements will take place in the Nizami Ganjavi Hall of the Fairmont Hotel in Baku, starting on July 17 at 9:30 AM.
