The forum discusses the dual goals of enhancing regional security in the South Caucasus and addressing global climate change challenges.
President Aliyev highlighted the unique opportunity presented by the forum to foster cooperation among the Southern Caucasian countries, a prospect that has been elusive since the Soviet Union’s dissolution. “COP29 is an excellent example of turning a new page in our history, one that aims for peaceful cooperation unlike our past which was marked by conflict,” stated Aliyev.
The President emphasized Azerbaijan’s readiness to address climate change issues, seeing COP29 as a platform to enhance the country’s visibility on the global stage. “We expect tens of thousands of visitors, many of whom will be coming to Azerbaijan for the first time,” he added.
In his address, President Aliyev also commented on Azerbaijan’s economic resilience and low foreign debt, which remains below 8% of GDP, asserting the nation’s strong economic standing even amidst global crises.
The ongoing normalization processes between Azerbaijan and Armenia, including border delimitation talks and the drafting of a peace agreement, were also touched upon. “We are closer than ever before to signing a peace agreement, now that we have a common understanding of its framework,” Aliyev noted, marking a significant shift from previous negotiations based on the Madrid principles.
The forum underscores the significant international support for Azerbaijan and its efforts to play a pivotal role in regional stability and environmental sustainability.
