He stated that in response to unfair and unsubstantiated calls by Fabio Massimo Castaldo, a member of the European Parliament from the Italian opposition party “Five Star Movement,” addressed to officials of the European Union and the European Parliament, he said that such a step risks undermining the peaceful agreements achieved so far. He emphasized that this is the worst way to interfere in matters related to events that are little known to them, both historically and in terms of international relations. According to him, Europe and Italy should work in a special way to create an atmosphere of easing between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Regarding Castaldo’s accusations using the term “Azerbaijani aggression” during the anti-terrorist local actions on September 19-20 this year, Cirielli stated that there is no political or military basis for such a formulation, calling it madness.
Cirielli added that Azerbaijan has never undertaken actions against the territory of Armenia, a fact that is well-known and confirmed by independent UN commissions. He mentioned that the migration that occurred was provoked not by Azerbaijani troops but by separatists conducting repressions in the region, with the goal of the separatists being to create additional reasons for tension.
In light of Baku’s repeated calls for peace, Cirielli noted that despite President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan winning the second Karabakh war and allowing Armenia to find a peaceful solution, he has also been trying to solve the problem peacefully over the past three years. The Deputy Minister of Italy added that, unfortunately, there have always been those in Europe who incite Armenian revanchism and Armenian nationalism, misleading Yerevan in matters not objectively provided for by international law.
Cirielli described Ilham Aliyev as a very pragmatic leader, stating that Azerbaijan categorically excludes any steps that contradict international law.
