Pakaeen emphasized that the ambiguity surrounding the issue, particularly after Putin’s visit to Azerbaijan, has raised concerns about potential changes to Iran’s borders and its relations with both Russia and Azerbaijan. He stressed the importance of diplomatic negotiations to avoid misunderstandings and ensure peaceful resolutions.
The former diplomat highlighted two possible scenarios for opening the corridor: military action, which could lead to regional conflict and violations of Armenia’s territorial integrity, or a peaceful negotiation that respects Armenia’s sovereignty while granting Azerbaijan access to Nakhchivan. Pakaeen noted that the latter option, though preferable, would require lengthy and complex negotiations.
He also warned against Western media attempts to exploit the situation to strain relations between Iran, Russia, and Azerbaijan. Pakaeen concluded by noting that Russia aims to open the corridor under its supervision, a move that Armenia opposes, as stipulated in the 2020 ceasefire agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
