Azerbaijan expects concrete actions from Armenia regarding the Zangezur Corridor, which holds strategic importance for the entire region. This was stated by Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, during the panel discussion “Middle Corridor: A New Geopolitical and Economic Lifeline” at the GLOBSEC 2025 Forum.
Hajiyev emphasized that Armenia’s “Crossroads of Peace” initiative is an overly narrow and belated approach.
“When Azerbaijani territories were under occupation, we discussed communications as part of the conflict resolution process. Now the conflict is resolved. We have ensured full security and stability in the region. Armenia can become part of regional discussions and key transport connections. We are negotiating with Armenia. We have no intention of marginalizing or isolating anyone in the region, but we do have certain expectations from Armenia,” he said.
Hajiyev recalled that Armenia kept Nakhchivan under blockade for 30 years, and now Baku is waiting for specific steps from Yerevan: “This step is related to the Zangezur Corridor. Armenia is somewhat irritated by the word ‘corridor.’ I always jokingly say that I wish the entire territory of Azerbaijan were a corridor. Fine, they can call it whatever they like, but first and foremost, we want to establish a connection with Nakhchivan, because for 30 years we were deprived of this opportunity. After that, new opportunities may also open up for Armenia. We want to see Armenia as part of the regional transport system,” he said.
