The head of EU foreign diplomacy, Josep Borrell, during a joint briefing with the Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in Brussels, described the shelling from the Armenian side against Azerbaijani servicemen as regrettable, but also stated that the Azerbaijani response was disproportionate.
Borrell highlighted that Azerbaijan’s actions, among other things, disregarded statements from the Armenian Ministry of Defense about conducting a thorough investigation of the incident. He emphasized the urgent need for the de-escalation of armed forces on both sides, a stance the European Union has long supported.
Borrell reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to a long-term peace based on mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders between the countries. Additionally, he advocated for enhanced cooperation with Armenia in the field of defense.
“We discussed ways to increase Armenia’s resilience. I expressed my readiness to fully enhance our cooperation in security and defense matters,” Borrell stated.
