During the call, Blinken praised the progress made towards advancing the peace agenda between Armenia and Azerbaijan and reaffirmed the United States’ determination to continue supporting the normalization of relations between the two countries. He urged both sides to sign a peace treaty soon. Blinken highlighted the importance the U.S. places on bilateral relations with Azerbaijan and emphasized the constructive cooperation between the countries in achieving shared goals in climate change and energy. He also mentioned that the U.S. supports stronger bilateral ties with Azerbaijan and is committed to ensuring the successful hosting of COP29 in Azerbaijan.
President Ilham Aliyev stated that peace in the region is secured, the principles underlying the peace treaty are set by Azerbaijan, and efforts towards normalization and advancing the peace agenda continue bilaterally. He appreciated the U.S.’s determination to contribute to the peace agenda and stressed the importance of Armenia ceasing its territorial claims against Azerbaijan, which are based on its constitution, relevant laws, and internal legal acts, to advance the peace agenda.
Aliyev added that it is long overdue to officially terminate the activities of the inactive OSCE Minsk Group and all related institutions to fully close the chapter of the conflict, which is a remnant of the past.
Aliyev touched on the long-standing successful cooperation between the countries in the energy sector, expressed satisfaction with the fruitful collaboration of the delegations in the preparation process for COP29, and thanked the U.S. for its intention to support the successful hosting of COP29. The President emphasized that Azerbaijan also values its ties with the U.S. and supports further strengthening and elevating bilateral relations to a new level.
During the phone conversation, satisfaction was expressed regarding the exchange of high-level letters between the countries and mutual delegation visits. Additionally, there was an exchange of views on human rights and democracy, and respect for the rule of internal laws of the countries.
