“On behalf of the people of New Caledonia, I would like to thank President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev for his statement this morning. That was a very powerful and very true statement,” said Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) delegate of New Caledonia in the UN Magalie Tingal said in an interview with journalists at the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Coordinating Bureau held in Baku, APA reports.
She said that it had been hypocritical of France to hold a referendum on the independence of New Caledonia during the pandemic: “France is acting very hypocritically. I thank the President of Azerbaijan for his statement about our situation. Today we are facing enormous problems in New Caledonia. The referendum on New Caledonia’s independence on December 12, 2021 coincided with the pandemic. We therefore asked for a postponement. However, France held a referendum and as a result, 57% of the population of New Caledonia could not participate in the referendum. Holding this referendum was hypocrisy on the part of France. We will fight for our rights. That is why we will take this issue to the International Court of Justice.”
Magalie Tingal said that France is pursuing a neocolonial policy by imposing financial pressure.
