Mammadyarov expressed this view on air during an interview on an Azerbaijani television channel, responding to a question about competition between men and women in chess.
Specifically, he stated that representatives of the fairer sex are significantly weaker than men.
“Women are much weaker than men. Many women won’t like this. But even among the top 100 chess players in the world, there isn’t a single woman. No female chess player can compete on equal terms with men,” Mammadyarov said, as quoted by Sputnik.
The grandmaster mentioned only one female chess player who competed on equal terms with men. He referred to Judit Polgar from Hungary, who at a certain period in her career was ranked in the top 10 of the world rankings. However, Mammadyarov somehow forgot about Hou Yifan from China, who also ranked among the top 100 and competed on equal terms with men.
Furthermore, the chess player began to compare the achievements of men and women in other fields.
“In which profession are women better than men? The fact that you’re thinking so much about the answer already says a lot. Take any sport, for example. If we look at the physical aspect, compare the results, for instance, in weightlifting. In the best restaurants in the world, chefs are men. Why? I wouldn’t want to answer this question; I want to maintain respect for women,” Mammadyarov said.
