President Aliyev emphasized that the right to return should be ensured mutually, including for representatives of the Western Azerbaijani community. He reminded that at various times in the past century, particularly in 1988, the indigenous Azerbaijani population on the current territory of Armenia was subjected to ethnic cleansing, and their material and cultural heritage was completely destroyed.
“I believe that we can finalize the text of the peace agreement or at least its main principles,” Aliyev stated.
He also noted that during the occupation period, the intermediaries’ plan was to agree on the main principles, known as the Madrid Principles.
“These principles were supposed to be initialed, and the text developed later. We believe that this could be one of the options – reaching an agreement on the main principles, initialing them, and then working on the text,” the president added.
