According to the STMEGI portal, Rabbi Lau spoke at a ceremony in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg, dedicated to Holocaust Remembrance Day. He shared the story of his own survival, noting that he lost both of his parents at the age of seven.
“I want to mention a country—a long-time friend of Israel: Azerbaijan, a Muslim state that has always maintained close ties with the Jewish people and Israel. Today, Azerbaijan stands shoulder to shoulder with Israel in the fight against evil,” the rabbi said.
Lau emphasized that throughout history, the Azerbaijani people have never committed acts of violence against Jews. He also noted that after the Hamas attack on October 7, hundreds of Azerbaijani citizens came to the Israeli embassy with flowers and words of condolence.
“We must remember the evil deeds of the past, but we must also express gratitude to those whose hearts burn with the fire of love and brotherhood toward the people of Israel,” the rabbi concluded.
