In a statement addressed on behalf of the Coordination Council of Azerbaijanis in France to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France, the French Parliament, and the mayor’s office of the city of Evian-les-Bains, this unacceptable incident was seen as a gross violation of the charter on mutual friendship and cooperation signed in 2015 between the Azerbaijani city of Ismayilli and the French city of Evian-les-Bains. It is noted that it was on the basis of this charter that the “Azerbaijani Square” was opened in 2017 in this city, where a monument to the outstanding Azerbaijani poetess Khurshidbanu Natavan, a symbol of the liberation of women of the world, was erected.
Recalling that Azerbaijan and Armenia are already at the stage of negotiations to sign a peace agreement, and that the city of Ismayilli has never been a subject of dispute between the two countries, the Coordination Council emphasized that the mayor’s office’s decision contradicts Article L. 1115-1 of the Municipal Code.
