By a decision of the French government, access to New Caledonia is closed, and an illegal curfew is still in effect. To hide the atrocities committed by the French police and gendarmerie from the global community, the fundamental rights of the Kanak people, who own the island, have been grossly violated, and freedom of expression has been restricted.
The Baku Initiative Group is organizing a hybrid press conference to break the information blockade and inform the global community about what is happening on the island.
Thus, on June 13, a group of journalists, well-known bloggers, and civil society activists from various African countries, as well as journalists from New Caledonia, will hold a roundtable and press conference on the topic “Decolonization, International Diplomacy, and the Role of Communication in the Modern World.”
The purpose of the conference is also to draw the global community’s attention to human rights violations in New Caledonia through the media and to discuss the establishment of joint cooperation in the field of communication to combat neocolonialism, a new stage of colonialism that continues in Africa. Local officials from New Caledonia will answer journalists’ questions.
It is expected that more than 20 representatives of foreign media will participate in the conference. The conference will be organized in a hybrid format and will take place on June 13 at 16:00 Baku time.
