President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev announced that Azerbaijan and Russia will embark on “another grand project” as part of the North-South transport corridor, necessitating new railway sections between Russia and Iran.
“Regarding the North-South transport corridor, today Vladimir Vladimirovich (Putin) and I have once again discussed this issue in detail, and appropriate instructions have been given to government members. I am confident that soon all issues will be agreed upon, and we will commence the implementation of another grand project,” Aliyev stated during a meeting with veterans and workers of the BAM, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the railway’s construction.
He reminded that “a railway connecting the Azerbaijani-Russian border with the border of Azerbaijan and Iran already exists on Azerbaijani territory.”
“However, the needs of shippers dictate the necessity for new sections of this railway so that we can increase freight traffic along it, thereby providing a unique transport route from the North to the Indian Ocean,” he added.
