Armenia also intends to cancel its five-year-old order for an additional eight Su-30SM Flanker-C jets. This report was shared by Avions Legendaires.
“This would mark the first contract since India decided to export its own Su-30MKIs.”
Currently, Armenia’s fighter fleet consists of four Su-30SM Flanker-Cs, delivered in spring 2019, along with about fifteen older Su-25Ks. However, just weeks after receiving these jets, Armenia ordered an additional eight Su-30SMs. Although partially paid for, with up to 70% of the contract amount settled, none of the aircraft have been delivered since. The reason is straightforward: Sukhoi has yet to produce any of these aircraft, with all Su-30s produced so far being directed to meet Russia’s own needs.
After five years, it seems Armenia’s patience has worn thin, notes news.am. This situation might lead Russia to lose not only a client but also an ally. Armenia has entered negotiations with HAL to procure between eight and twelve Su-30MKIs. Under the terms being discussed, Hindustan Aircraft Limited would supply eight new jets if Sukhoi refunds the advance payment and would upgrade Armenia’s existing four Su-30SMs to the Su-30MKI standard. This upgrade includes replacing the original radar with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) Uttam radar.
These talks, part of the “Super 30” program, involve a package of long-range Astra 1 air-to-air missiles, Rudram 1 anti-radiation missiles, and SAAW guided bombs—all designed and manufactured in India.
