This was announced by Vugar Kerimov, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan.
According to Kerimov, the Caspian Sea’s water level has dropped by 2.5 meters over the past 20 years, leading to significant ecological and economic challenges for coastal countries, including Azerbaijan. During one of the panel discussions at COP29, participants will address necessary measures for adapting to this inevitable decline.
Climate finance will be the main theme of the event, but issues related to the Caspian Sea will also be a prominent focus. Participants are expected to discuss strategies for mitigating the consequences of the sea’s declining water levels.
Kerimov further noted that Azerbaijan’s water resources have decreased by more than 15% over the past 30 years, and forecasts suggest that by 2050, this figure could reach 15-20%.
