Michel criticized Russia’s peacekeeping forces for not responding when Baku initiated its military action. “It is clear that Russia has betrayed the Armenian people,” Michel said.
While Michel has been instrumental in the EU’s mediation efforts between the two nations, the bloc has been criticized for not taking decisive action. Despite the criticism, Michel defended European mediation, highlighting some progress like prisoner exchanges. He also expressed his disappointment with Azerbaijan’s decision and affirmed his commitment to supporting Armenia.
The EU Council President is expected to meet leaders from both countries at an upcoming European Political Community summit in Granada, Spain. He emphasized the need for Azerbaijan to adhere to international law and protect the rights of all its residents, including Armenians.
Michel also addressed the EU’s energy relationship with Azerbaijan, emphasizing that while Baku is an EU partner, the relationship is complex. He countered claims that the EU overlooked signs of aggression, pointing to the EU’s diversified energy options post the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Lastly, in the context of EU support to Ukraine, Michel acknowledged potential differences but stressed the importance of EU unity and collaboration.
