The meeting set for October 5 in Granada, involving the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, with the participation of the European Union President, Charles Michel, German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and French President, Emmanuel Macron, has been canceled.
It’s clarified that Azerbaijan insisted on Turkey’s participation in the meeting. However, official Ankara was not permitted to join the negotiations, with France and Germany particularly adamant about this matter.
Furthermore, recent statements from Armenia, France, Germany, and ultimately, Charles Michel, have made it clear that this platform harbors an anti-Azerbaijani sentiment. Remarks made by the French Foreign Minister during her visit to Armenia have shown that France takes a very stern, almost antagonistic stance towards Azerbaijan.
Statements and observations made during Catherine Colonna’s trip to Armenia have shattered the last illusions regarding the “importance” of the meeting in Granada. Against this backdrop, Azerbaijan declined the meeting. President Ilham Aliyev is not traveling to Granada. The source states, “Azerbaijan does not see the rationale in participating in this format. Why should countries far from our region discuss its problems?”
If the agenda retains the previous tripartite EU-Azerbaijan-Armenia format, Azerbaijan might participate. However, any format that involves France is unacceptable for our country. Azerbaijan will not participate in negotiations on a platform where France is represented.
