Ukraine has not yet reached a final agreement with Azerbaijan on the transit of Azerbaijani gas through Ukraine’s gas transportation system (GTS) after the transit agreement with Gazprom expires at the end of 2024, which Kyiv does not want to extend.
This was stated by the head of Ukraine’s Naftogaz, Alexey Chernyshov, in an interview with Liga.net.
According to him, the GTS is one of the state’s key assets that should work to ensure market access in the future, “when Ukraine becomes a gas exporter.”
“We do not have the right to suspend this system. Because if we stop it, the European market will reorient itself to other suppliers within a few years. In fact, we are looking for alternative solutions. For example, businesses from Azerbaijan, specifically the company Socar, have approached us. But there is no final solution yet, and it is too early to talk about it,” Chernyshov noted.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with Bloomberg that Ukraine is exploring the possibility of transporting Azerbaijani gas through its territory to the EU after the transit agreement with Gazprom ends.
