Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan commented on the views expressed by several Armenian diplomats, including former foreign ministers, that the Almaty Declaration “cannot be a basis” for the delimitation of borders with Azerbaijan and is merely a confirmation of the absence of territorial claims by the former Soviet republics.
During a joint press conference with the Acting Chairman of the OSCE in Yerevan, Mirzoyan began by noting the positive feedback from countries and organizations. Addressing the core issue, he stated his efforts to stay out of domestic political processes and disputes.
“However, as a member of the political team… trying not to cross the boundaries of propriety… I cannot but make two remarks. The experienced diplomats you mentioned are the deserters who abandoned their posts, their trenches on the days when a military aggression occurred or was occurring on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia. After stating this issue, I cannot have any seriousness regarding these people and their positions. This is the mildest assessment. But the reality is even worse. By targeting the Almaty Declaration and the peace process based on it, these individuals—whether intentionally or not—are targeting the sovereignty, statehood, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia. At best unintentionally, at worst under the dictation of another country,” he noted.
