OSCE member states are expected to adopt a decision on the official dissolution of the Minsk Group on September 1. This was announced by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov at a special government meeting dedicated to the results of President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Washington.
According to Bayramov, Azerbaijan and Armenia submitted a joint appeal to the current OSCE Chairperson to abolish the Minsk Group and its related structures. “The appeal has been circulated among OSCE member states, and a decision is expected on September 1,” the minister said.
He recalled that until the end of January this year, Armenia had refused to accept several provisions of the draft peace treaty with Azerbaijan, particularly those concerning the withdrawal of legal claims from international courts and the prevention of deployment of third-party forces along the common border.
Bayramov noted that the situation changed after the administration of Donald Trump took office in the United States. The joint declaration signed by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in the presence of the U.S. president confirmed Azerbaijan’s peace agenda.
The minister added that Baku expects Yerevan to amend Armenia’s constitution and fully eliminate territorial claims against Azerbaijan in order to finalize the signing of the peace agreement.
