When asked about US sanctions against Azerbaijan, the head of state stated, “Sanction policies have no right to exist, especially when they are illegal, completely unjustified, and applied selectively. Therefore, we are categorically opposed to sanctions. I believe the international community must express its consolidated position. We are voicing this stance at the national level.”
“As for the sanctions imposed on us, and not only on us… Sanctions were first placed on us in 1992 based on a fabricated accusation that we were blockading Armenia, while at the same time, our territories were under Armenian occupation. These sanctions were lifted in 2001 when the US needed to transit its cargoes, both by air and land, as well as by sea, through Azerbaijani territory to Afghanistan. Every year, US presidents, regardless of their party affiliation, would lift these sanctions by their decision—up until the moment the US withdrew from Afghanistan. Afterward, these sanctions were reimposed on us. When I accused them of ingratitude, I believe that was not the harshest term that could be used in this context,” said the president of Azerbaijan.
