“Today major infrastructure projects are being implemented in Zangilan District. Among them I would like to mention the transport infrastructure, a part of the Zangezur corridor. The international airport in Zangilan will be commissioned this year. I am confident that this airport will have great functions, because in the future we see Zangilan as an international transport and logistics center. This will be guaranteed by the location of the region, its proximity to international markets and other factors,” President Ilham Aliyev said during his video conference with Vahid Hajiyev on May 4 regarding the latter’s appointment as Special Representative of the President for Zangilan District, which is part of the East Zangezur economic region.
“Putting the second airport in Zangilan after Fizuli certainly proceeds from the geographical location. This airport will be an important tool in addressing our economic, transportation and security issues. As for the Zangezur corridor, this is already a reality. Both the railroad and the motor road through the territory of Zangilan District will not only connect the mainland Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, but will also become a new road for international cargo transportation, an international road. Therefore, we are also speedily building a four-lane and six-lane highway for the convenience of the former displaced persons. Partial commissioning of this road will begin next year,” the head of state said.
The President also mentioned that a multilane road from Zangilan to Gubadli and from Gubadli to Lachin is being built. It will provide the connection between the districts of the East Zangezur economic region.
“As for the railroad, the last link of the railroad infrastructure in this direction is currently Horadiz. The construction of the railroad from Horadiz to Agban is already underway, and I am confident that it will be fully operational next year. This infrastructure will benefit both citizens and international shippers. We will also connect the mainland Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through the Zangezur corridor, and a completely new transport corridor will be opened, given that Azerbaijan has recently received many requests from the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea. Both the number of those seeking to send cargo through the territory of Azerbaijan and the volume of shipments are growing. Undoubtedly, the Zangezur corridor will create additional opportunities for us and the neighboring countries,” the head of state said.
