Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev delivered sharp criticism of U.S. foreign policy under President Joe Biden, describing relations between Baku and Washington as being in a state of “deep crisis.”
“Our level of trust in the Biden-Blinken team was close to zero. The United States openly sided with Armenia — something that had never happened before in the history of the conflict,” Aliyev stated.
The President recalled the re-imposition of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The amendment, which restricts direct assistance to Azerbaijan, was described by Aliyev as an act of ingratitude.
“When the U.S. needed Azerbaijan, the amendment was waived. Once they no longer did, it was reinstated. That says a lot,” he emphasized.
Despite the recent tensions, Aliyev expressed hope that a potential second term for Donald Trump would mark a shift toward a more pragmatic, interest-based approach to international relations — one in which Azerbaijan could serve as a key strategic partner for the United States.
